Kansas Funnel Facts: Tornado Safety Tips
Tornados are a common occurrence in Kansas, especially during the months of April, May, and June. These large tornados only occur with thunderstorms and require a special profile of winds in the storm’s surroundings, along with warm and very unstable air. While tornados can happen in other months as well, it is important to be prepared and know how to stay safe during these dangerous weather events.
Tornado safety is your responsibility, and following these rules can help you remain safe during a tornado:
1. Stay away from windows
2. Put as many walls between you and the tornado as possible
3. Evacuate upper floors of homes and buildings
4. Go to the center of the basement if you have one
5. Interior bathrooms and closets are good places to seek shelter
6. In schools, go to interior hallways away from windows
7. Evacuate mobile homes and cars and find a ditch, shelter, or culvert for protection
Remember, it is important to take tornado warnings seriously and have a plan in place for when severe weather strikes. Stay informed and stay safe!
