The postcard features a portrait of Benjamin Franklin, painted by Joseph Siffred Duplessis in Paris around 1780-85. Franklin (1706-1790) was a Founding Father of the United States, known for his work as a statesman, scientist, and inventor. The quote He snatched the lightning from heaven and the scepter from tyrants likely refers to his experiments with electricity and his role in the American Revolution. The original painting is housed at Independence National Historical Park in Philadelphia. The postcard was published by the Eastern National Park & Monument Association.
