The Florida Keys are home to five species of sea turtles, which were once heavily harvested for their shells, meat, and eggs. This led to a large commercial turtle-harvesting industry in the region. However, due to dwindling numbers and conservation efforts, sea turtles are now protected by federal and state laws.
